On 14 November, the duty officer at the Police Station in Bogatynia received a report of a woman being deliberately hit near one of the city’s main streets. Police officers from the local station were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The officers’ findings showed that the driver of an Audi had hit a woman standing behind the vehicle. As a result, the 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The perpetrator drove away without providing her with assistance. The police established the driver’s identity, but he hid for several days.

Further actions by officers from the Criminal Unit of the Bogatynia station led to the arrest of the 43-year-old driver.

On the basis of the evidence collected, a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec charged the suspect with causing serious bodily injury. This offence carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The court applied the most severe custodial preventive measure to the suspect: three months of pre-trial detention.
