The upcoming Independence Day encourages Poles to display national flags, which, in accordance with the law in force, should be displayed with due dignity and respect.
The Polish flag as a symbol of national identity
The flag of the Republic of Poland consists of two equal horizontal stripes: white at the top and red at the bottom, in a 5:8 ratio. In Poland, the national flag takes precedence over other flags. Although there is no obligation to display it on 11 November, many families and institutions do so out of respect for the national symbol.
How should the flag be displayed properly?
- The flag should be clean, ironed and in good condition. It must not be torn, dirty or faded, nor may it contain any additional inscriptions or symbols.
- The flag must not touch the ground.
- Except on official occasions, the flag should not be placed in a way that could dishonour it or distract from its significance.
Penalties for insulting the flag
Failure to follow the rules for displaying the flag may be classified as insulting national symbols. Pursuant to the provisions of Article 137 of the Penal Code and Article 49 of the Code of Petty Offences
Persons committing such acts may be punished with a fine, detention or restriction of liberty. The fine for insulting national symbols ranges from PLN 20 to PLN 5,000, and in more serious cases restriction of liberty may be imposed, for example in the form of community service.
What should be done with a worn-out flag?
If the flag becomes damaged, it should not be thrown in the rubbish. The following is recommended:
- Separate the material into pieces and burn it in a non-public place.
- Some offices have containers intended for depositing worn-out flags.
Independence Day is a time to express patriotism by displaying the flag in a dignified and responsible manner. Let us remember to keep it neat, respect the dignity of the symbol and follow the legal rules protecting flags and other national symbols. This ensures that our patriotic gestures remain consistent with the law and tradition.
