In September 2025, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Głogów filed an indictment against 50-year-old Robert M., who killed his 73-year-old mother in one of the apartments in Głogów. “The man reported the incident himself and waited for the police to arrive. He said he had committed the murder using a hammer and a knife,” Liliana Łukasiewicz, press spokeswoman for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica, recounts. “He was sober and was not under the influence of intoxicants. He behaved without any emotion, did not cry and showed no visible signs of nervousness.
It was established that the victim was ill and had been suffering from a chronic disease for a long time. Her condition, however, was not serious. She managed everyday matters without difficulty. Meanwhile, the defendant had lived and worked abroad permanently for 18 years. He came to Poland in December 2024. His purpose? To care for his mother after his father’s death in October 2024. He did not work anywhere. He had a very good reputation among the neighbors.
He killed his mother at night, after 2:30 a.m. He called the police at around 8:00 a.m. After the murder, he washed the weapons and laundered his clothes.
What did investigators establish?
Based on the opinion of a forensic medicine expert, it was established that the woman died as a result of multiple-organ injuries: extensive craniocerebral injuries, including numerous fractures of the skull vault and base, crushing and bruising of the brain, and internal bleeding caused by stab wounds to the chest that damaged the aortic arch and left lung.
Robert M. was charged with intentional murder, motivated by reasons deserving particular condemnation, namely the desire to avoid responsibility associated with caring for his mother, who had a chronic cancer illness. The spokeswoman said:
In doing so, he showed blatant disregard for the fundamental value of human life. The suspect’s motivation has no rational justification whatsoever, expressing extreme selfishness and complete indifference toward a close family member who required support and assistance.
M. confessed to committing the crime. He explained that he had been thinking about killing his mother for some time because he wanted to relieve her suffering and also intended to avoid having to care for her in the future. He added that he loved his mother very much and did not know why he had killed her. He wanted to commit suicide himself, but was afraid that his mother would not cope with his death.
The suspect also stated that after committing the murder, he spent some time wondering what to do next. He then went to sleep. After waking up, he decided that he would notify the police in the morning.
Due to doubts about Robert M.’s sanity, experts in psychiatry and psychology were appointed. After a single examination, the doctors, being unable to issue a definitive opinion, requested psychiatric observation. Prosecutor L. Łukasiewicz said: “After it was conducted, the experts concluded that at the time of the acts, the defendant retained the ability to recognize their significance and to control his conduct. He was diagnosed, however, with a personality disorder, which does not constitute grounds for questioning his sanity.
Robert M. has been held in pretrial detention since the day of his arrest. He is single and has higher education. He has no previous convictions. He faces up to life imprisonment.
