Officers from the Criminal Department of the Zgorzelec county police headquarters established, during intensive operational activities, that a 43-year-old man suspected of setting fire to a Peugeot vehicle was inside one of the commercial premises in Pieńsk.
When he saw the officers, the man fled inside the shop. When he noticed a police officer running after him, he decided to attack him with a replica samurai sword.
Fortunately, thanks to the experience and skills of the intervening officers, he was quickly subdued and arrested. Unfortunately, during the dynamic police operation, one of the officers was wounded in the hand with the sword.
The aggressive 43-year-old was then taken to the Zgorzelec prosecutor’s office, where he was charged with property damage and active assault on a police officer. By court decision, he was placed in pre-trial detention for three months.
We remind you that anyone who, acting jointly and in agreement with another person or using a firearm, knife or another similarly dangerous object or incapacitating device, commits an active assault on a public official, or in connection with the performance of official duties, is punishable by imprisonment from one to 10 years.
The Zgorzelec District Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation against a 43-year-old resident of Zgorzelec suspected of damaging a vehicle by setting it on fire and actively assaulting, with a dangerous object, a police officer intervening against him. – The investigation findings show that during the night of September 8–9, 2025, in Pieńsk, the perpetrator doused a Peugeot 307 with a flammable liquid and then set it on fire – reports Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska, press spokesperson for the Jelenia Góra Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The vehicle, worth PLN 10,000, was completely destroyed by fire. The prosecutor: – As a result of the operational and investigative activities undertaken, officers of the Zgorzelec County Police Headquarters identified the person who committed the offense and decided to arrest him.
The officers received information that the perpetrator was in the vicinity of one of the shops in Pieńsk. The spokesperson:
When they arrived at the scene, the man, seeing them, ran into the back room of the shop and then grabbed a “katana”-type sword and swung it at one of the police officers attempting to arrest him.
To avoid being struck in the head, the officer shielded himself with his left hand, suffering cut wounds to the first and fourth fingers of his left hand.
The other intervening officers subdued the attacker.
After being brought to the Zgorzelec District Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect was charged with property damage and active assault on a police officer using a dangerous object.
The perpetrator did not admit to committing the acts of which he was accused, but confirmed that he had set the car on fire and attacked the victim. He gave an explanation.
The man, who was placed in three-month pre-trial detention by the court at the prosecutor’s request, now faces up to ten years in prison.
The man had been convicted many times. He committed the act of vandalism under so-called recidivism conditions.
