On 9 September, ceramic artist Władysław Garnik, who was associated with Bolesławiec, died. As the Wałbrzych Porcelain Museum reported:
His presence within the Museum’s walls, as well as during the International “Porcelain Differently” Symposiums, was always inspiring. His works were repeatedly presented at exhibitions in Poland and abroad, where they delighted audiences and showcased the richness of the ceramic world
The artist’s works can also be admired in Bolesławiec.
The Wałbrzych institution adds:
Władysław Garnik was born on 31 July 1937 in Proskuriv, in Polesia. His artistic path led through the High School of Fine Arts in Szczecin and two prestigious institutions: the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (painting) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (ceramics), where he himself was a respected lecturer for many years. He was also a co-founder of the “Not Only Us” Creative Group and an Honorary Member of the World Crafts Council – Europe. He worked in sculpture, drawing, painting and, of course, ceramics.
His own words best demonstrate his passion and his drive to keep creating: “I work in ceramic material, which dictates the subject, technique, form, texture and colour. The work arises from an inner calling and an incessant need to create. It constitutes the essence of my existence.”
Władysław Garnik’s works, full of innovation and sensitivity, are now part of the collections of many museums around the world. He was an artist who was never afraid to take risks. As Professor Grażyna Płocica wrote about him, he built “intricate, openwork lattice structures” from delicate porcelain, while also creating “monumental” clay objects embodying “obsessions with the human being in the leading role”.
W. Garnik’s funeral will take place on 15 September at St Lawrence Cemetery in Wrocław. It will begin at 1:00 p.m..
