We invite you to a concert by the competition winners, which will focus on the theme of love. The Shanghai Camerata ensemble will perform a programme featuring works by Barbara Strozzi, Dario Castello and Claudio Monteverdi—composers whose works reflect the various faces of this emotion.

The Italian artist Barbara Strozzi was one of the most highly regarded singers of her time and an exceptionally prolific composer. She left behind almost exclusively secular works; during the Venetian woman’s lifetime, eight collections of her works were published. The concert programme will include an excerpt from the cantata Diporti di Euterpe, published in 1659: Lagrime mie, as well as the serenata Hor che Apollo è a Teti in seno from the collection Arie, Op. 8.

The violinist and composer Dario Castello also came from Venice, where he performed and published his works. He wrote “in stile moderno” and was therefore a representative of the avant-garde of his time. The core of his output consists of two collections of instrumental sonatas. Fate did not give him the chance to live and create for long, however—the artist died at just twenty-eight during the plague epidemic that struck Italy at the turn of the 1620s and 1630s.

Claudio Monteverdi, one of the most prominent figures of the early Baroque, was also associated with Venice, as well as Cremona and Mantua. His collection Scherzi musicali was published in that city in 1632 by the Bartholomeo Magni publishing house. The artists will perform the fifth of the six pieces comprising the collection—Et è pur dunque vero.
