At the end of March, aspirant Jacek Kawałko received a call reporting that a small boy was having trouble breathing. The choking child’s older brother called 112 and wanted to summon an ambulance. Police officer Jacek Kawałko asked the child’s age and what exactly was happening to him. The one-and-a-half-year-old boy’s mother was also with him. The officer acted immediately. He instructed the mother over the phone on how to provide first aid to her child—how to check whether the child’s airways were clear, whether a pulse could be felt, and how to perform artificial respiration. Meanwhile, another police officer notified the emergency medical services. Aspirant Jacek Kawałko helped the family of the choking boy until the ambulance crew arrived at the child’s side.
On Monday (April 18), the mother of the rescued boy thanked the police officer for helping her administer first aid to her son. Jacek Kawałko received flowers and heartfelt thanks from the grateful mother. The rescued and healthy boy also received gifts. The police officers gave him sweets and a mascot of the Lower Silesian police—a children’s friend, “Commissioner Leo.”
This is not the first case in which a Bolesławiec police officer helped save a child. In December 2009, junior aspirant Krzysztof Policht helped save a -year-old boy. At that time, the boy’s father provided first aid.
