The Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre invites you to an exhibition of stained glass by Magdalena Konieczna. “My paintings begin in nature; then I play with colour, subjecting the shapes to delicate syntheses,” the artist says about her work. “I let light pass through a lead drawing, creating ‘divisions’. I experience the material, saturating the stained glass with a glow seeping from somewhere deep within the image, or I kindle the composition with a colourful radiance. I place this painterly adventure within the frames imposed by medieval craftsmanship.”
In her work, the metaphysics of light has been translated into the language of art through stained glass, enabling an entirely new interpretation of the role of colour in shaping space. And it is precisely into this unique world that the artist’s work will transport us. “It is not only the role of light in the essence of composition that takes us back to the Middle Ages,” Magdalena Konieczna explains. “Stained-glass technology has survived to this day virtually unchanged. Just as during its heyday, stained-glass making is still primarily a craft. And, as in the past, it imposes discipline and means that one cannot take shortcuts here.”
Stained glass, brought to life by the interplay of light within the structure of the glass, means that as the light changes, so does the image we perceive. This guarantees that every visitor to the “Divisions of Light” exhibition will find something unique in the works.
The opening will begin at 18:00 on Friday, 8 April. The exhibition will be open to visitors until 3 May 2011.
