On Monday, March 28, the Jerzy Szmajdziński Foundation was established in the Sejm. Almost 130 people took part in its creation, led by Aleksander Kwaśniewski, former President of Poland. The family of the Sejm’s tragically deceased deputy speaker was also present at the ceremony.
Kwaśniewski became chairman of the foundation’s council, while Andrzej Dobrowolski from Jelenia Góra became head of its board. The organization’s council also includes the well-known singer Natalia Kukulska. Among the founding members— the only person from Bolesławiec—was Józef Burniak, the former mayor of our city.
The foundation is intended to be apolitical. It will help young athletes, recognize the authors of the best diploma theses devoted to military issues, and support the development of local democracy.
In May this year, with the foundation’s cooperation, the Jelenia Góra county head and the mayor of Karpacz will organize the Jerzy Szmajdziński Tennis Tournament (tennis was the Sejm deputy speaker’s favorite sport).
