The District Prosecutor’s Office in Lubin filed an indictment in June this year against a 47-year-old resident of the town of Rudna – Paweł K., who on January 24, 2025, at night, while she was asleep and apparently without reason, beat his wife, striking her in the face and kicking her all over the body, and then – while threatening to kill her – struck her with a knife in the neck, in the occipital area, causing a 2-cm-deep stab wound.

– The injuries resulted in impairment of the functioning of the woman’s bodily organs for less than seven days, but exposed her to the risk of serious harm to health in the form of a life-threatening illness – explains Liliana Łukasiewicz, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica. – The perpetrator did not cause more serious consequences only because of the victim’s actions. The woman fled the apartment and called for help.

She adds: – The defendant, Paweł K., and the victim have been married for several years. They live together in an apartment in Rudna, do not work, and habitually abuse alcohol. During their marriage, arguments frequently broke out between them, but there had never been any physical violence. Paweł K. drinks alcohol every day. In the past, he underwent addiction treatment. Without result. For approximately eight months, the aforementioned man had been on a so-called alcoholic binge.

On January 23, in the evening, the couple drank together. The victim then went to bed. Around 1:00 a.m., she felt blows. As investigators established:

First, she was struck in the face, and then beaten on the back. Next, her husband began kicking her.

The woman screamed for help. K. continued the attack, shouting that he would kill her. At one point, the defendant took a knife lying on a table and stabbed his wife in the back of the neck. The woman then ran out of the apartment onto the street and began calling for help. She stopped a passing car and asked the driver to call the emergency number.

After some time, a police patrol arrived at the scene and arrested Paweł K. He was charged and placed in temporary detention. The perpetrator remains in custody.

The spokesperson: – During his first interrogation as a suspect, Paweł K. did not admit to committing the alleged act and refused to provide explanations. Later, he claimed that his wife had stabbed herself with the knife. During the investigation, an expert opinion ruled out that possibility.

The opinion of forensic psychiatrists indicates that the defendant was sane. However, the psychiatrists diagnosed the aforementioned man with alcohol dependence resulting in secondary personality disorders and behaviors manifested by irritability, a tendency toward impulsive actions and behaviors, reduced emotional control, and diminished critical judgment.

According to the experts, the defendant knows and properly understands the basic principles of social coexistence, correctly assesses social situations, and is able to foresee the legal consequences of the act of which he is accused. The defendant can participate in the ongoing proceedings and stand trial.

The man had previously been convicted. He has an average reputation among his family and neighbors. He now faces up to 20 years in prison.
