Statement from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra:

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra has launched an investigation into the unlawful deprivation of liberty, lasting more than 7 days and involving particular torment, of a 51-year-old Ukrainian citizen.

The preliminary findings of the investigation indicate that the perpetrator tricked the victim into going to one of the abandoned buildings in Jelenia Góra by offering her the opportunity to stay there temporarily and free of charge. Then, from 10 June 2025, he unlawfully detained the victim on the premises. During that time, he beat her with his hands, a belt and a wooden board on the head, face and entire body, causing extensive injuries, particularly to her face. He also threatened to kill her.

On 18 June 2025, the woman tried to escape. However, the perpetrator restrained her by force, then beat and raped her again.

It was not until 19 June 2025 that the victim managed to escape and notify law enforcement authorities.

The woman was taken by an emergency medical services team to the hospital in Jelenia Góra to receive medical assistance.

The perpetrator, meanwhile, was arrested by officers of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra near the place where he had detained the victim. He is a 40-year-old resident of Jelenia Góra and has been convicted by the courts many times.

After being brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, he was charged with the unlawful deprivation of liberty lasting more than 7 days and involving particular torment of the victim, criminal threats and rape.

Questioned as a suspect, he did not admit to the alleged offense. He gave an explanation.

Today, the prosecutor will apply to the District Court in Jelenia Góra for pre-trial detention to be imposed on the suspect.

An application will also be submitted to the District Court in Jelenia Góra for the victim to be questioned in accordance with the required procedure.

For the felony allegedly committed by the suspect, classified under Article 189 § 3 of the Penal Code, Article 190 § 1 of the Penal Code and Article 197 § 2 of the Penal Code in conjunction with Article 11 § 2 of the Penal Code, he faces a sentence of 5 to 25 years’ imprisonment.

On 19 June 2025, the duty officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra received an unusual report from officers at the Detention Centre. – A desperate and beaten woman knocked on their gate, asking for help. The guards took care of her, provided shelter and called an emergency medical team and, of course, a police patrol to the scene – reports Sub-Inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer for the Jelenia Góra Municipal Police Headquarters.

The police immediately took up the case and were at the detention centre a moment later, where they found the woman with clear bodily injuries. The spokesperson said: – The 51-year-old was shaken and complained of severe headaches and chest pain. According to her account, she had been beaten by an acquaintance with whom she had stayed for several days in one of the abandoned buildings in the city.

The woman showed the officers a photograph of the man, enabling them to immediately identify the suspect. He was already known to them from previous interventions and conflicts with the law.

The officers immediately began operational activities and set out to arrest the man. They checked several locations, including one unoccupied building, and as they were leaving the building, they noticed the 40-year-old approaching it.

When he saw the patrol, he immediately began to flee, but the pursuit was brief and the man was taken to a police holding facility. Sub-Inspector Edyta Bagrowska:

Further procedural activities are currently being carried out under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra to clarify all the circumstances of the incident. The police have already secured the necessary evidence in the case and questioned the victim.

She added:

Today, the suspect will be brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, where the prosecutor will present the charges to him. An application will also be submitted for pre-trial detention to be imposed on him.

The police remind the public: – Violence in any form will never be tolerated, and anyone who commits such acts must expect consequences and severe punishment.
