1986 remained etched in the memories of the residents of Bolesławiec and Sanok for a long time. That was when the two cities faced each other in the popular Televised Tournament of Cities. It was a unique outdoor spectacle, inspired by the format of the international programme “Jeux sans frontières” (Games Without Borders) and broadcast live.
The tournament was not only about competing in a series of around a dozen events—from spectacular dance and music performances to various races, including tractor and scooter races and even a typing competition—but also about promoting local crafts and traditions. Both cities had the opportunity to showcase their song and dance groups, unique handicrafts and regional culinary specialities. Charitable collections and recyclable-material drives were also organised during the programme, further bringing the local communities together.
At the time, the Televised Tournament of Cities attracted crowds of viewers in front of television screens throughout Poland. Great personalities of the era appeared on the set, including hosts Eugeniusz Pach, Zygmunt Chajzer and Tadeusz Sznuk. The jury included, among others, the famous rally driver Sobiesław Zasada and music critic Jerzy Waldorff.
By taking part in the Tournament of Cities, Bolesławiec gained another opportunity to promote its heritage, famous ceramics and colourful customs, while its rivalry with Sanok—an energetic city in the Podkarpacie region—fostered a spirit of cooperation and sporting motivation. Today, memories of 1986 still warm the hearts of those who remember the colourful flags, swirling ribbons, loud cheers and friendly competition. It is a story of passion, unity and sharing an unforgettable adventure.
