The District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra has filed an indictment with the District Court there against 44-year-old Jelenia Góra resident Paweł K., accusing him of attempting to murder his wife and children and repeatedly violating a court order prohibiting him from contacting and approaching the injured party Małgorzata K..

– The investigation established that the accused had been abusing alcohol for a long time, and under its influence behaved aggressively toward his wife and three minor children. Paweł K. started arguments during which he insulted household members using words commonly regarded as offensive and threatened to kill them – prosecutor Ewa Węglarowicz-Makowska, press spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra, reports.

The result? In April 2022, the court imposed, among other measures, a ban on Paweł K. personally contacting the injured party and approaching her closer than 5 meters.

Prosecutor:

However, the perpetrator did not comply with those prohibitions. Between January 8, 2024, and April 23, 2024, while under the influence of alcohol, he went to the injured parties’ apartment six times, using words commonly regarded as offensive toward them and threatening to kill them.

On April 23, 2024, at 4:00 a.m., he again came to his family’s home. He stood at the door and tried to open it. When the attempt failed, he began threatening the injured parties with death. He moved flammable items under the door of the room where his wife and children were located and then set them on fire, starting a blaze that released poisonous gases directly endangering the injured parties’ lives and preventing them from escaping the apartment. Prosecutor E. Węglarowicz-Makowska: – Thanks to the swift response of the emergency services, all the injured parties were evacuated and the fire was extinguished.

Spokesperson:

Paweł K. admitted setting fire to the entrance door of his family’s apartment, but stated that he had not intended to deprive anyone of their life. He explained his conduct by saying that he had consumed a large amount of alcohol.

And she adds:

During the investigation, court-appointed psychiatrists were consulted. They determined that the accused is neither mentally ill nor intellectually disabled. However, in their assessment, he is alcohol-dependent. The experts unanimously concluded that at the time he committed the alleged offenses, he was fully accountable for his actions.

The man could face life imprisonment.
