On November 13, after 2:00 a.m., the duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica was notified of an unusual attempted break-in at a commercial property. Using an excavator, the perpetrators tried to breach the outer wall of the commercial building housing a bureau de change. They struck the building’s wall with the excavator bucket. Their aim was to access the rooms where currency was stored. Despite causing significant damage, the perpetrators were unable to overcome the security measures and get inside. After the failed break-in attempt, they fled the scene.

Police took action to identify and apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible. Thanks to a thorough analysis of the evidence, as well as traces left at the crime scene and excellent knowledge of the local criminal environment, combined with intensive operational activities, they quickly identified the suspects. Although the perpetrators were identified almost immediately, they hid in various locations.

As a result of a planned operation, police officers simultaneously forced their way into several apartments in Legnica. A total of five people were detained in connection with the case. During a search of one suspect’s residence, a police dog trained to detect the odor of narcotics uncovered half a kilogram of intoxicating substances. A drug test showed that it was methamphetamine with a street value of nearly PLN 100,000. Another suspect possessed items originating from other break-ins. These included power tools, measuring devices, navigation systems and car radios, which were secured by the officers.

At the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica and the Police, after analyzing the evidence, the court decided that a 41-year-old resident of Legnica would be temporarily detained for three months. The second detainee, a 39-year-old resident of Legnica, was placed under police supervision and required to provide a property bond. Police do not rule out that the detainees may be connected with other crimes, so further proceedings are aimed at fully clarifying the circumstances of the case.
