On Tuesday, November 26, Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart arrived at the center in Jerzmanice-Zdrój. The visit took place after a 13-year-old boy, a resident of the center, attempted to take his own life. The incident occurred last week.

Earlier—as established by the Ministry of Justice—he had been beaten by one of the educators. The boy is in hospital in Legnica. He is in a pharmacologically induced coma, tvn24.pl reports.

The educator and the center’s director have been suspended. The educator was charged with abusing the 13-year-old. Psychologists have been sent to the center to ensure that the children feel safe.

Deputy Minister Maria Ejchart, who was at the center on Tuesday, was shocked:

“I am shocked by our findings and by the tragedy that has occurred. The boy is fighting for his life. I spoke with the other residents, who are deeply affected, and the most important thing for me now is to ensure their safety and that they feel safe,” she said during a press briefing. “The entire case, as well as the center’s operation, is now being thoroughly examined by ministry experts. Our work in recent days has produced important findings which, I hope, will help the prosecutor’s office with its investigation,” added Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart, quoted by tvn24.pl.

The case is being handled by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Złotoryja. The Ministry of Justice is supervising the case.
