Last Tuesday, 22 October of this year, in the afternoon, in Legnica, a 13-year-old girl riding a bus overheard a conversation between other people, from which it emerged that a certain woman had been using public transport for a long time. The woman’s behavior indicated that she might be struggling with health problems.

For this reason, the girl became concerned about the fate of the woman she had encountered by chance, and her kind, heroic heart told her that she could not remain passive. While the adults merely discussed the woman, Ania got off the bus after her at one of the stops and, without hesitation, called the emergency number 112 to request assistance. She then continued walking behind the elderly woman and kept the police informed of her whereabouts.

Thanks to the girl’s heroic actions, her knowledge of the emergency number 112 and the dispatcher’s skills, help arrived in time. It soon became clear that the elderly woman was suffering from an illness; she was not in logical contact and did not know her own name. Shortly after the girl notified the services of the incident, the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica received a missing-person report from the elderly woman’s family. The 66-year-old resident of Legnica was examined in hospital and then placed in her family’s care.

Ania was thanked for her exemplary conduct by the First Deputy Commander of the Police in Legnica, Superintendent Kamil Piasecki, and the Deputy Commander of the Municipal Police in Legnica, Junior Inspector Anna Farmas-Czerwińska, who invited the girl and her mother to the Legnica police headquarters.

Ania’s behavior is an example for her peers and adults alike: in a crisis situation, one must remain calm and take actions that can save someone’s health or even life.
