Digital television offers excellent picture quality and, above all, no fees for watching it. Reception requires either a new television or, if you have an older receiver, a suitable decoder. In the latest LCD and plasma televisions, the decoder is an integral part of the device. With older televisions, you need to purchase an external decoder. It is installed between the antenna and the receiver. The same antennas are used to receive digital television as for analogue television.
Broadcasters recommend using multi-element antennas. The antenna should be pointed towards Żagań, as for now it is the location of the nearest transmission facility broadcasting digital television. Poland has chosen the MPEG-4 standard for image compression. This is worth noting because older flat-screen televisions support only MPEG-2.
“At present, TVN, TVN7, Polsat, TV4 and Puls can be received from Żagań. Polsat plans to launch Polsat Sport News as well, while TV4 plans to launch TV6 for young people. Puls intends to do the same by launching Puls2,” says Robert Dąbrowski from the TeleAudioVideo showroom in Bolesławiec.
In the future, probably at the end of 2011, further channels will become available digitally: TVP1, TVP2, TVP Info, TVP Kultura and TVP Historia.
