A reader who shared with us a photo and video he recorded while shopping at a well-known brand’s store was outraged by what he saw. In an email to the editorial office, he wrote:

Good morning. Will you look into the matter and describe the cleanliness at the Biedronka store in Bolesławiec? Cleanliness in these stores falls well below standard, but today (15 July – editorial note), when I saw worms at the bread counter at the Biedronka store at 25a Komuny Paryskiej Street, I was completely stunned."

What the reader saw was probably a pantry moth larva. The adult pantry moth is a moth. The female lays eggs mainly in loose products. The eggs hatch into larvae that take the form of caterpillars. Their bodies are elongated and white, with dark heads.

On 17 July, we asked the Press Office of the Biedronka chain for a comment on the matter.

Thank you for reporting the matter. We assure you that we treat every such report, even if incidental, with the utmost seriousness and make every effort to ensure that the problem is resolved.

In the case of the store mentioned, we immediately took appropriate action. The store’s entire surface, including, among other areas, the sales floor, staff facilities and the baked-goods station, was thoroughly cleaned. In addition, the entire store was fumigated yesterday (18 July).

The surplus pallets were also collected from the store and transported to the distribution centre.

The renovation of the bakery counter has also been scheduled for the near future.

We are attaching photos of the store taken on 19 July this year.
