A reader contacted the istotne.pl editorial team and sent photos of a popular vegetable – broad beans. According to the reader, the broad beans were purchased on Friday, 12 July, at one of the Bolesławiec markets of a popular chain. The packaging of the broad beans showed a delivery date of 10 July 2024.

According to the reader, the purchased broad beans were: “mouldy and slimy”.

The appearance of the vegetable really did not encourage its consumption. Therefore, we urge you: check products carefully before buying them. Check the dates and, if possible, the appearance of the product. Broad beans are sold in plastic bags. You can inspect them and initially determine whether you are dealing with a fresh vegetable or not.

Fresh broad beans are a real delicacy, but how can you make sure you are buying the best product?

Here are some tips to help you recognise fresh broad beans:

  • Appearance: Fresh broad beans should have a uniform, light-green colour. Avoid broad beans with dark spots, discolouration or dull skin,
  • Smell: Fresh broad beans have a delicate, pleasant smell. If the broad beans smell unpleasant or sour, or have a strong odour, they are probably spoiled,
  • Texture: The skin of fresh broad beans should be firm and smooth. When gently squeezed, the broad beans should be elastic, not soft or limp,
  • Storage: Broad beans are best stored in the refrigerator.

Broad beans are a tasty and healthy vegetable

Broad beans are a legume with many valuable health benefits. They are rich in plant-based protein, making them an excellent alternative to meat, especially for vegetarians and vegans. They also contain plenty of fibre, which supports digestion and provides a feeling of fullness, potentially helping with weight control. Broad beans are also a source of folic acid, iron, magnesium and B vitamins, supporting cardiovascular health and helping treat anaemia. Regular consumption of broad beans may lower cholesterol levels and regulate blood pressure.
