The unsettled weather is not letting up. Forecasters have issued another warning of thunderstorms with hail. On Tuesday, 18 June, a powerful hailstorm passed over the northern part of Bolesławiec County. On social media, readers are sharing photos of hailstones the size of ice cubes for drinks. According to their accounts, hail of this size fell in Przejęsław, Ławszowa, Trzebień, Gromadka and Borówki. The storm bypassed the city of Bolesławiec yesterday. It rained briefly several times.

What determines the size of hail?

The size and shape of the ice pellets that form during hailfall depend mainly on atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, humidity and wind speed while the storm is forming. The stronger the storm and the greater the temperature difference between the hot air below and the cold layers above, the larger the hailstones can be. In addition, local weather conditions and cloud mass can also affect the size and intensity of hailfall.

The impact of climate change on the course of atmospheric phenomena

Climate change has a significant impact on severe weather events such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, heavy rain and hailstorms. Rising global temperatures may lead to intensified atmospheric circulation, which in turn may increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

For example, higher ocean surface temperatures may promote the formation of stronger and more intense hurricanes. Climate change may also affect precipitation variability, which may result in more frequent torrential rain and hailfall.

In addition, increased glacier melt and changes in atmospheric circulation may affect local weather conditions, leading to extreme events such as floods, droughts and extreme temperatures.

Therefore, it is important to monitor climate change and take measures to manage the risks associated with severe weather events in the context of a changing climate.
