On the 14th anniversary of the Smolensk air disaster, representatives of local governments and NSZZ “Solidarity” laid wreaths. Commemorative speeches were delivered by Jan Filipek, Honorary Citizen of Bolesławiec, and county governor Tomasz Gabrysiak.

On April 10, 2010, 96 people died in the crash of a Tu-154M aircraft near Smolensk, including President Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, the highest-ranking commanders of the Polish Armed Forces, and the last president of the Republic of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski. The Polish delegation was traveling to commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.
