The incident took place on Wednesday, February 7, at around 5:00 a.m., at the Gdańska–Śluzowa intersection. The Mercedes driver, a resident of Bolesławiec, failed to give way to a Volkswagen driven by a resident of Zgorzelec.

The vehicles collided. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. (The at-fault driver was fined).

A reader who witnessed the incident while on her way to work shared the following observation with us:

(...) this morning there was yet another—I’ve lost count by now—accident at the intersection of Gdańska and Śluzowa streets. The traffic organization at this intersection was changed several years ago; an intersection of roads with equal priority was created (apparently, such an intersection was needed for training new drivers, and unfortunately this location was chosen).

And she added: – Previously, “for as long as anyone could remember,” Gdańska Street was the main road, while cars speeding downhill from Śluzowa Street were stopped by a stop sign. When the changes were introduced, the newly developing housing estate between Śluzowa, Lubańska and Garncarska streets was forgotten / not taken into account; its dense development caused a significant increase in traffic in this area.

She concluded:

Why aren’t the institutions responsible for organizing traffic in the city responding to changing conditions? This type of intersection makes absolutely no sense under the current circumstances.
