The modernization of street lighting in Bolesławiec is being carried out as part of the project “Modernization of street lighting in the western and southern parts of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.” The investment includes replacing 3 148 lighting fixtures with modern LED road-lighting fixtures, replacing and installing poles qualified for replacement, and painting outreach arms. Lighting cabinets qualified for replacement are also being modernized. It is worth recalling that the project also provides for the installation of the Smart Lighting Management System – Smart Lights, enabling wireless and autonomous control of LED lighting fixtures (control at the level of an individual LED fixture). This system supports advanced lighting scenarios for each fixture separately, as well as groups of fixtures. Two-way communication between the LED fixture and the control system will be based on a data-transmission network operating in a licensed band. The system will be expandable, allowing not only LED lighting fixtures but also additional Smart City functionalities to be connected and operated, such as air-parameter sensors, dusk and occupancy sensors, and measurement sensors.
The project “Modernization of street lighting in the western and southern parts of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship” received funding under RPO WD 2014–2020, Priority Axis 3, Low-Emission Economy. The value of the project is PLN 13.4 million, including PLN 3 369 253.08 from the Bolesławiec city budget and PLN 10 075 632.31 in funding under RPO WD. The project is being carried out in partnership with the Municipality and Town of Lwówek Śląski, the Zgorzelec Municipality, the Duszniki-Zdrój Municipality, the Lubań Municipality, the Municipality and Town of Bogatynia, and the Zawidów Municipality. The Bolesławiec Municipality is the project leader.
The aim of the lighting modernization is to reduce energy consumption and, consequently, greenhouse-gas emissions, which will improve air quality in Bolesławiec. The reduction in CO2 emissions compared with the pre-modernization level is estimated at approximately 60%. The installation of new lamps is expected to improve the city’s appearance, but above all, replacing all outdated and energy-intensive road-lighting fixtures with energy-efficient ones will reduce the costs associated with lighting the city.
