The Bolesławiec Forest District operates an emergency and dispatch center. The duty officer monitors the fire situation in the forest. In the past, this was done by people stationed in towers; now it is done using cameras.
The location where a fire may have started is determined by triangulation. The fact that smoke is visible somewhere does not always mean that this is where the fire broke out. Sometimes it starts several dozen, and occasionally even several hundred, metres from the place where the smoke was spotted.
Visible smoke does not always mean a forest fire either. Grassland fires also occur. Sometimes someone lights a campfire. Or burns branches, which is illegal. At times, the smoke is related to military exercises being conducted.
In the case of a forest, however, reaction time is extremely important. That is why the foresters from the Bolesławiec Forest District remain in constant contact with their colleagues from the Świętoszów, Węgliniec, Złotoryja and Lwówek Śląski Forest Districts. The aim is to prevent the fire from spreading.
The forest-monitoring operation has been extended until mid-October due to the weather conditions. It is important to remember that it is still hot, and by late morning the forest floor is as dry as tinder. In such conditions, it is easy to accidentally start a fire, and consequently for a fire to break out. That is why foresters are appealing to residents to behave responsibly in the forests.
