The incident occurred on 11 May, in the early evening. Officers of the Legnica Railway Protection Guard surprised two men stealing steel railway sleepers on the Miłkowice–Jezierzany route. Railway Protection Guard Headquarters:
The officers noticed an off-road vehicle without registration plates near the tracks and two men who were loading steel railway sleepers into its trunk. When they saw the officers, the thieves hurriedly fled.
As they tried to drive away, the suspects steered the vehicle toward the intervening Railway Protection Guard officers; they attempted to run them over.
The Guard:
One of the officers clearly signaled the driver to stop. However, the driver did not respond and tried to run over the officers. The thieves’ behavior posed a direct threat to life and health; consequently, one of the officers drew his service weapon and fired a warning shot in a safe direction.
He added: “Despite the warning, the driver continued driving dangerously, as a result of which the Railway Protection Guard officer fired three shots at the speeding vehicle.”
The officers who intervened were unharmed, but the thieves fled the scene. Further proceedings in the case are being conducted by police officers from Chojnów and Legnica. Let us recall that this type of theft is punishable by six months to as many as eight years in prison.
