The incident occurred on Saturday night into Sunday. – The duty officer at the Zgorzelec police headquarters was notified of a fire in one of the residential premises in Zgorzelec – reports Asp. Aleksandra Pieprzycka from the Press Section of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.
Emergency services, including police officers from the Zgorzelec headquarters, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Firefighters found the body of a man in the building—a 51-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County. He could not be saved. The spokesperson said: – At the same time, the injuries he had sustained could indicate that he had been beaten.
A prosecutor, a forensic technician and a fire-investigation expert were called to the scene. Asp. A. Pieprzycka said: – Police officers undertook measures aimed at clarifying all the circumstances of the incident. As a result of their actions, officers from the Zgorzelec headquarters detained four people who could have been connected with this tragic event.
She added:
Based on the procedural and operational activities carried out and the evidence collected, a prosecutor from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec brought charges against two of those detained. The men, aged 35 and 39, are suspected of murdering the 51-year-old man and setting fire to the deceased man’s premises in order to destroy evidence of their crime.
The court ordered the suspects to be held in pre-trial detention for three months. Both could face life imprisonment.

The officer in charge of the firefighting operation determined during reconnaissance that smoke and a fire had occurred in a living area of a single-storey building. During firefighting and a search of the premises, a person was found on the kitchen floor and was then evacuated outside the building. The evacuated person was handed over to the Emergency Medical Team. After the injured person was examined by the Emergency Medical Team, the paramedic pronounced them dead.
The firefighters’ further actions consisted of checking the remaining rooms of the premises to determine whether anyone was inside—no one was found. Smouldering furnishings were carried outside the building and doused with water. A thermal-imaging camera was used to check the ceilings and walls of the premises. The other residents of the building evacuated before the rescuers arrived.
