Young people want to know more. Some already plan their career paths while still in secondary school and look for opportunities to start their own businesses. European lessons can be helpful for them, among others. This is a meeting during which practical knowledge is provided about EU funds intended to help improve people’s quality of life. The information is useful not only for the students themselves, but also for their relatives and friends.

- This year, we have held around 200 European lessons in total. It combines pleasure with usefulness. We spend enjoyable time together; it is interesting, dynamic and fun, but above all, students take valuable knowledge away from these classes – says Aleksandra Kukuła from the European Funds Information Point (PIFE) in Legnica, who led a class at the Zespół Szkół Elektryczno-Mechanicznych in Legnica in December.

There are always plenty of questions

Violetta Aktanorowicz, headmistress of the school in Legnica, believes that the European lessons held there regularly always attract interest. The young people listen attentively and have many questions, such as what to do to study at a foreign university or how to obtain funding for specialist training.
- They also often ask on behalf of their parents or friends because, for example, they are about to finish school and want to start their own business with an older friend. And that requires money – the headmistress explains.

That was the case this time as well. The students actively participated in the class.

- I liked the lesson very much. I gained a lot of interesting information and will certainly share my knowledge with my friends – says Daniel. His friends – Przemek, Grzegorz and Marek – also emphasized, when asked for their opinions about the lesson, that information about funds that can help finance courses or internships with potential employers is very useful. They believe it is good to know that such opportunities exist and that they can be used.

At the school’s invitation

European lessons in secondary schools are prepared by consultants from the network of PIFE points operating in Wrocław, Jelenia Góra and Legnica. But it is not only in these cities that it is possible to organize classes about the European Union and its funds: all post-primary schools in every locality in the region can submit an application.
Consultants visit the institution at an agreed time and present students, in an accessible way, with information about opportunities to obtain EU support for various purposes, such as training, starting or developing a business, building thermal modernization, and assistance for dependent people. It might seem that, because of their age, students are not the most suitable group to receive information about the possibility of using EU funds, but the strong interest in European lessons dispels these doubts. For young people, this is good preparation for entering adulthood; moreover, they are happy to share the knowledge they gain on social media.
