Let's start at the beginning: what is an ebook?

Ebook is short for "electronic book", meaning an "electronic book". In fact, it is a replacement for a paper book, modeled on it. It therefore contains all the elements of traditional publications – a cover, a table of contents and graphics. The only difference is that in this case everything fits into a single file, which you can read using any device – an e-reader, as well as a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Where can you find ebooks?

You will find hundreds of bookstores online offering a wide selection of ebooks, which you can purchase just like a paper book. The difference, however, is that a title in this format reaches your virtual library almost immediately and is ready to read.. You can also borrow ebooks – many online libraries offer this option. Platforms operating on a subscription model will provide unlimited access to thousands of titles – in exchange for a (usually) monthly fee. Today, the availability of individual titles in electronic form is almost identical to that of traditional books. You can easily find electronic versions of new releases, as well as book classics.

Why do we so readily reach for electronic books?

Ebooks have a number of advantages that a paper book will never be able to compete with. One of them is the ergonomic shape of an e-reader, which means you can always have it with you. They are usually small and light, so you can easily fit one in a backpack or even a small handbag and take it anywhere. What is more, electronic books are much more environmentally friendly than paper ones, whose production uses tons of felled trees every year, while the printing, binding and finishing process consumes huge amounts of energy and water.

Are you a night owl? Do you like spending the late hours devouring one title after another? In that case, ebooks will work much better for you! Modern e-readers have backlit screens that make it possible to read even in the dark. What is more, they have been designed so as not to tire the eyes as much as traditional print. This makes them an ideal solution for people who reach for books very often. Ebook readers also offer a range of options that paper solutions could never provide readers with – including changing the font size, brightness level or contrast between the background and the letters. However, all the advantages of an electronic book must be considered alongside its disadvantages. Although there are few of them, it is impossible not to mention that an ebook will not be a good choice for people who love the smell of books or the sound of rustling pages, and who treat reading as a kind of ritual, a personal encounter with a physical, paper object. In this case, we are dealing with an electronic device that, unfortunately (for now), does not provide us with such experiences.

Ebooks have changed the face of reading around the world. This form of books offers a number of advantages that traditional paper publications can never provide. We hope that if you have not yet had the opportunity to check whether this way of discovering new titles is right for you, this article has convinced you to do so!
