During the December session of the Bolesławiec Municipality Council, the councillors unanimously adopted a resolution establishing natural monuments.

The justification for the document states:

This resolution was prepared after analysing applications submitted by residents of Suszki and Trzebień and by the “Twoje Dziedzictwo” Foundation. The applications concerned granting natural monument status to three trees in Suszki, one tree in Kruszyn and one tree in Trzebień Mały.

Preliminary inspections conducted by an employee of the Bolesławiec Municipality Office, followed by a detailed inspection carried out by Mr Kamil Witkoś-Gnach, an arborist from Usługi Arborystyczne – Kamil Witkoś-Gnach, based at Bożkowice 34 A, 59-830 Olszyna, resulted in the selection of the trees covered by this resolution for legal protection. Due to their size, meeting the criteria of the aforementioned regulation, and their location, these trees have considerable dendrological and landscape value and are key elements of the local landscape. They also provide a wide range of ecosystem services, while their dimensions contribute to significant quantities of oxygen production, carbon dioxide storage and interception of rainwater runoff.

The natural monuments in question were given names:

  1. NIMLOTH, for the broad-leaved lime tree located in Kruszyn. The name was given by the Twoje Dziedzictwo Foundation, which applied for the tree to be protected as a natural monument. The name comes from the prose of J.R.R. Tolkien and refers to the tree that was the ancestor of the White Tree of Minas Tirith.
  2. JONASZ, for the European ash located in Suszki. The name refers to Jonas Reder, one of the village’s former owners, when Suszki formed part of the Skała estate.
  3. LASZKA, for the broad-leaved lime tree located in Trzebień Mały. The name refers to the pedunculate oak Lach growing in the village.

What do you think of the “Tolkienian” lime tree?
