Below we publish a letter we received from the family of the deceased doctor.
It is with sorrow that we announce that our father, Olgierd Niewodniczański, died in Lubin on June 6, 2010.
Holy Mass and the funeral will take place on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the municipal cemetery in Bolesławiec, on Śluzowa Street.
Our father was born on August 9, 1921, in Kovel, Volhynia. In 1943, fleeing the pogrom, he left for Warsaw. In 1944, he was taken to Wrocław for forced labor. In 1945, he began studying at the University of Wrocław, graduating in 1950 with a medical degree. In 1947, he married our mother, Zofia, who passed away in 1987. On December 31, 1952—under an assigned-work order—he began working at the hospital in Bolesławiec, where for 35 years he served as head of the obstetrics and gynecology department. His particular professional achievement was introducing, for the first time in Poland, mass screening of women for the early detection of cervical cancer. Although he retired in the 1980s, he continued to work professionally, eventually doing so entirely as a volunteer. He was very proud that, under his “supervision,” many thousands of children came into the world. And we are grateful to him for bringing us—and our children—into the world.
Our father was a good man.
Tomasz, Paweł and Marcin Niewodniczański, together with their families.
