The story was described on the Facebook profile of Klekusiowo Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre.

It all began in the village of Gronów, located in Gmina Zgorzelec. White storks have a nest on one of the buildings there...

Read how Mrs Wanda describes the whole story:

(...) This year was very “fruitful.” Four storks were born. The nest is next to our house (a small palace). Our storks often sit on our large roof; that is also where they learn to fly, take off and land. We have large-diameter chimneys on the roof, and the young storks like to perch there.

Early in the morning on 9 August 2022, on our wedding anniversary, one of the young storks fell into our chimney after an unsuccessful landing. We began a rescue operation. As it happened, that day we had an appointment with our chimney sweeps from Zgorzelec. Our chimney flue is approximately 20 metres high. The stork fell all the way to the bottom of the chimney.

Operation to remove the stork from the chimney

There was no choice; we had to break through the thick wall to reach the chimney. Mr Daniel and Mr Irek quickly made a hole through the wall. Meanwhile, I called our veterinarian and asked how we should get him out and what to watch out for. Our veterinarian instructed us... not to break his legs and to be careful of his beak! The chimney sweep Irek pulled our stork out. He was covered in soot. We carried him outside and released him. He flew a short distance and landed in our park.

Operation to remove the stork from the chimney

That same day, all our storks flew away, leaving our stork “Chimney Sweep” alone. We began looking for help. We called the veterinary inspection office in Zgorzelec. They told us to contact the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Tomaszów Bolesławiecki. That is how our stork ended up at the centre. We are happy that such a centre exists and provides professional assistance to animals in need.

Thank you very much. Wanda Dück, Gronów.
