Five Ukrainian secondary-school graduates who came to our country after 24 February have decided to take the matura examination. They all attend the same school: the II Janusz Korczak General Secondary School in Bolesławiec.
– I have been attending this school since 20 March. It is a chance to get into a university in Poland. I am most afraid that I will not fully understand a task. I already know a lot of the material; now I am just translating it into Polish. I feel most comfortable with English and mathematics. I studied Polish for a year, so I think I know something. I would like to stay in Poland because I have Polish roots. My mother and my brother, who works in a hospital, are here – says 17-year-old Denis.
– I came to Poland on 28 February. Thanks to the matura exam, I have a chance to get into university. In July, I will also take the Ukrainian matura exam. Now I am most afraid of Polish. I still do not understand everything, and it is a little difficult. I feel prepared for English, mathematics and advanced Ukrainian. I am a little afraid of Polish. I have some doubts. In the future, I would like to study at an aviation school – says 17-year-old Nazar.
There are 5 of the 42 students in Poland who will take the matura exam in Bolesławiec. – There are so few of them because of the significant language barrier. The students arrived recently and were admitted to the school in mid-March. It is impossible to master Polish within a month. My students are students who studied Polish in Ukraine. I spoke with my English and mathematics teachers. They are certain that the students from Ukraine will pass these subjects – adds Mirosław Sakowski, headmaster of the II Janusz Korczak General Secondary School in Bolesławiec.
