The GXO logistics center in Osła near Bolesławiec not only handles the global fashion brand H&M. The center’s grounds also include an apiary with five bee colonies, which has received a certificate confirming its commitment to protecting the natural environment. Apiaries have a positive impact on the environment because they promote biodiversity and plant flowering, which contributes to better living conditions for people.
The apiary is managed by Jędrzej Górny of Boża Pasieka, a multigenerational beekeeping business located approximately 30 km from the logistics center. In October 2021, more than 100 kg of dark multifloral honey was harvested. It contains nectar from buckwheat, goldenrod, phacelia, linden, wildflowers and herbs, as well as honeydew. The honey was given to GXO and H&M employees.
The spring inspection of the apiary has just been completed, marking the end of wintering—the period when bee colonies remain in the apiary, keeping warm and feeding the queen. During the inspection, beekeepers check the condition of the bees, as well as the food supplies and bee bread in the hive. In spring, bees focus on collecting fresh pollen and water to raise new generations of bees.
To ensure the safety of GXO and H&M employees, gentle bee breeds were selected for the apiary at the logistics center. GXO has placed warning signs and information boards about bees and is prepared to provide medical assistance if necessary.
