The donations brought by residents of Bolesławiec and the county in response to the appeal from Urząd Miasta Bolesławiec, Starostwo Powiatowe and Towarzystwo Miłośników Lwowa i Kresów Południowo-Wschodnich were sent by bus today to the partner city. Why by bus? Adam Fornal explains. The bus brought children from Ukraine and, on its return journey, can be used to transport donations.
One of the organizers of the campaign is Barbara Smoleńska, who received a letter from the mayor of Zbaraż on Friday, February 25, in which the Ukrainian official asked for help.
“The people of Zbaraż need two levels of assistance,” explained Barbara Smoleńska. “For the refugees from the east whom they are taking in. They need mattresses, blankets and bed linen to prepare places for their compatriots fleeing the war. Things are relatively peaceful there. They have had only two alerts. Not all Ukrainians are leaving for Poland; many are staying in the country. Zbaraż has a large hospital receiving the wounded, and it needs support. I translated the letter from the mayor of Zbaraż, contacted the mayor of Bolesławiec, Piotr Roman, and a relief campaign was organized immediately,” adds Barbara Smoleńska.
