Letter from the Wolna Gromadka Association to Gromadka Municipality councillors
During the 15th session of the Gromadka Municipality Council, a vote was held on adopting the “Local Government Charter of Family Rights”, in which you took part. We were concerned to see your support for this harmful resolution, a resolution directed against us and our families (including yours). Unfortunately, the adopted document, created by the ultraconservative Ordo Iuris Foundation, makes part of our society feel excluded from our community.
Under the guise of concern for the family, you adopted a resolution dividing our municipality, dividing people into better and worse, into those who may be called a family and those who have been cast out of that family. The document’s authors repeatedly claim that a family can consist only of a woman and a man in a marriage. This alone excludes single parents, blended families, parents in unmarried relationships and parents belonging to the LGBTQ community. Furthermore, the adopted resolution deprives children of their status as subjects of rights, stating that parents have the right to raise their children according to THEIR OWN beliefs.
The Charter deeply interferes with educational activities, essentially making it impossible to provide reliable sex education, downplays the issue of domestic violence caused by alcohol abuse, and undermines the right to freely conduct business activities. Finally, the document completely excludes non-heteronormative people from the community, repeatedly indicating that there is no place for them in the presented definition of family.
Dear Madam/Sir, we ask you to listen to our voice and withdraw from the adopted resolution as soon as possible.
We appeal to you to follow the example of other local governments that understood the gravity of the situation and decide to repeal this resolution, which compromises our Municipality.
Furthermore, the Municipality filed a defamation lawsuit against the “Atlas of Hate” organisation. The aforementioned organisation created a map marking local governments that had adopted anti-LGBT resolutions and Local Government Charters of Family Rights.
Thus, on the one hand, the Municipality Council adopted a resolution discriminating against some citizens, while on the other it accuses those who revealed the actual state of affairs.
We appeal to you, as representatives of all residents of our municipality, to cause this lawsuit to be withdrawn.
