A life story of Mr. Staszek from Złotoryja could easily serve as the basis for a film script. He spent his childhood in Sweden. Later, his life did not turn out well. Alcohol addiction caused him to end up on the streets. For many years, he lived in basements and attics.
Fate smiled on him several weeks ago. His family and people of goodwill helped him. – The local police officer, Senior Staff Sergeant Maciej Biernat, showed particular commitment in this matter. Thanks to him, Mr. Staszek entered addiction treatment and was vaccinated – reports Staff Sergeant Dominika Kwakszys, press officer of the Złotoryja District Police Headquarters. – The officer helped him purchase plane tickets, gave him his own clothes, and just before departure invited him to dinner with his family, after which they went to the airport together.
The result? Mr. Staszek returned to his family home. After 30 years, he met his mother.
How did it happen?
Spokeswoman:
Several weeks ago, a woman contacted the duty officer at the Złotoryja police unit. On behalf of her 86-year-old mother, who has lived in Sweden for years, she asked them to find her son. The information provided indicated that the man was a resident of Złotoryja. He had spent his childhood in Sweden. Later, he came to Poland and remained here.
And she adds:
The mother wanted him to return to her and spend the remaining years of her life with her. She asked her relatives to contact the Złotoryja police unit.
The aforementioned Senior Staff Sergeant Maciej Biernat took up the case. During his daily service, he checked abandoned buildings and local attics, basements, and other places where the wanted man might be staying.
As it turned out, Mr. Staszek was staying in one of the basements in the city center. The uniformed officer went there, gave the homeless man the good news, and told him that he wanted to help. Mr. Staszek – initially embarrassed by the whole situation – decided that he wanted to return home, to his mother. And thus change his life.
What did the Złotoryja police officer do?
- Thanks to his efforts, Mr. Staszek was vaccinated against COVID-19 and entered a two-week addiction treatment program.
- The officer helped him purchase plane tickets to Sweden.
- Just before departure, when Mr. Staszek left the hospital and had nowhere to go, the police officer invited him to his home and gave him clean clothes.
- After dinner with the officer’s family, he drove the homeless man in his private car to the airport in Wrocław. (At the airport, the local police officer requested special assistance for Mr. Staszek. As a result, an airport employee accompanied the man from Złotoryja through the entire check-in and security process – right up to taking his seat on the plane).
His family was already waiting for him there. Mr. Staszek returned home. After 30 years, he met his mother. Fate smiled on him. Thanks to the help of people of goodwill, he has a chance at a new life.
