The incident occurred on August 21. As firefighters from OSP Ruszów report:
At 2:38 a.m., firefighters from Ruszów were alerted to a fire in an apartment in a building on Borowska Street in Ruszów. When they arrived at the scene, they found a fully developed fire in an apartment on the upper floor and in part of the attic—the flames had already spread outside and covered approximately one-third of the roof.
The fire was noticed by one of Ruszów’s residents, who notified the emergency services and woke the other residents. Unfortunately, that was not the end of it. The firefighters:
The firefighters were informed that one resident was missing and was probably inside the burning apartment. The fire inside was highly developed, and it was only possible to thoroughly search the room after it had been extinguished. Unfortunately, the information was confirmed: beneath a pile of roof tiles and remnants of the burned ceiling, the firefighters found charred human remains.
The police and the prosecutor’s office are investigating the causes of the tragedy. Firefighters from Ruszów, Jagodzin, Węgliniec and Zgorzelec took part in the operation, along with the police, an emergency medical team and the power emergency service.
