Last year, the outstanding Krakow-based Rafał Kmita’s Group delighted the people of Bolesławiec with the performance “Ay vay, or Stories with Cinnamon.” This year, Bolesławiec Cultural Centre invites you to another cabaret performance – “We’re All from the Same Overcoat.”
The performance is based on texts by the great authors of Russian literature: Nikolai Gogol, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov. Rafał Kmita himself writes about the performance:
Why 19th-century Russia? Probably because I like this somewhat childish image of it that I have. The steppe’s vastness. Evenings of card games. A winter blizzard. Wistful music. Listless boredom. A deep bow. Tales told on a farmstead. Sitting down before setting off. And a broad soul. And a love unto death. And the madness of drunkenness. And nostalgia. And revelry until oblivion... […]
Gogol’s “The Overcoat” is one of the most beautiful stories I have ever come across. I think that, by reading it – by reflecting on human helplessness, on harm and poverty – we also learn something about ourselves. Namely, how much sensitivity there is in us, how ready we are to be moved, how many tears. I trust that – despite everything – there are still many people who are more from “The Overcoat” than from “McDonald’s.” It is for them that we made this performance.
