The Regional Environmental Protection Inspectorate will inspect the bells of the Parish of Christ the King in Bolesławiec. Their acoustic nuisance will be examined. Measurements of impulse-noise emissions into the environment will also be taken.

Residents of apartment blocks on Jana Pawła II and Wańkowicza streets complain that the bells ring too loudly and too often.

– I live on Jana Pawła II Street and work night shifts. I go to bed after 7:00, and the bells wake me at 12:00, in the middle of my rest. It is unbearable – one of our readers writes.

Another reader adds that sometimes the bells wake her small child, after which she has trouble getting the child back to sleep.

The bells on Jana Pawła II Street are located in the middle of the housing estate, in a low bell tower a few metres above the ground. They ring three, sometimes four, times a day (at 6:30, 12:00, 17:30 and 18:30). There are even occasional single strikes... in the middle of the night.

Under the regulations, bells may ring only before “events associated with religious worship” (this is the wording used in the act). There is no service at 12:00, yet the bells are activated. On top of this, there is the issue of acoustic nuisance. If the sound is too loud (and at least two bells always ring), this may also constitute a violation of the law.

The parish priest did not respond to a letter concerning the nuisance caused by the bells, although it proposed a compromise (for example, shortening the time the bells ring or using only one bell).
