At Grodziec Castle in the Zagrodno municipality, a series of examinations is underway in cooperation with the monthly magazine “Odkrywca.” The municipal authorities make no secret of their hope that new discoveries will encourage tourists to visit the fortress again—and to learn about its new secrets. As Zagrodno’s officials emphasize, both the castle and the entire municipality are exceptionally interesting places.
The castle well has just been examined. (To do so, the water was pumped out.) Various legends had circulated about the structure itself, all the more so because there was no photographic documentation of the site.
Stories claimed that a passage led out of the well and connected with the fortress’s underground chambers. Others said that an escape tunnel was located there.
What is the result of the examination?
The researchers make no secret of feeling somewhat disappointed. There is no escape tunnel; instead, there is a recess that is... approximately 1 metre deep.
Nevertheless, the explorers do not intend to give up. Their attention was particularly drawn to one wall that has been built up with masonry. This certainly sustains the researchers’ hope of a truly sensational discovery. However, examining this lead will require cooperation with a historic-preservation officer and archaeologists.
Is this stage of the examination a failure? Everyone involved in the project agrees that it is not, because new knowledge about the castle has been gained—and knowledge is the greatest treasure.
