We report that Rita’s surgery was successful. Rita is a Labrador who had a gigantic tumor and was brought to the clinic to be euthanized after several years of watching the tumor grow to monstrous proportions.

And they add:

The tumor weighed 6 kg. It is the largest tumor we have ever had the opportunity to remove from an animal’s body while saving its life.

Let us recall. On July 21, we reported that the story of Rita the Labrador had been described by volunteers from the Wrocław Ekostraż. They began their post very tellingly:

A Labrador with a basketball-sized tumor and her owners’ words: “Good morning, we wanted to put the dog to sleep.”

And they added:

The Labrador is already with us. We are still in shock—this is the largest tumor we have seen in our 11-year history. The dog has difficulty not only walking, but even lying down. Apart from that, she is a wonderful dog, still full of vitality.

How is this possible? How can someone let something like this grow for several years? And no—don’t write to us that perhaps someone could not afford treatment. The dog had several hundred fleas on her (video in the comments); everyone knows how much flea treatment costs. It was simply complete callousness, irresponsibility, and abuse through failure to provide treatment or seek help.

A veterinarian from Bolesławiec refused to perform euthanasia

The story is connected with the City of Ceramics. Ekostraż:

Huge thanks to the doctor from OptimaVet Gabinet Weterynaryjny Bolesławiec and the vigilant patient Monika, who sought help for the dog. The doctor refused euthanasia at the owner’s request. Tumors of this kind can, in most cases, be successfully operated on, giving the dog relief and several more years of life.

The volunteers appeal:

Having a dog in Poland is a right, not an obligation. Can’t afford one? Don’t get one. Planning to put a dog in a kennel once it stops being a cute puppy? Don’t get one. Let no dog end up like Rita: in a yard, with a swarm of fleas and a basketball-sized tumor.

And they announce that they will file a report with the prosecutor’s office.
