It is becoming increasingly common to receive emails claiming that someone recorded us while we were browsing erotic websites. These are scammers trying to extort money.
In the email, they claim to have recorded us through our webcam or phone camera. They write that they will send our photos and videos to our friends and family unless we pay them; if we do, they say they will not do so and will destroy the recordings. Don’t be fooled—it’s a scam.
Of course, it is possible for someone to take control of a camera or webcam, but it is extremely difficult. Smartphones always ask whether a particular app may use the camera. You simply need to be careful when granting an app permission.
Below is an example of the letter sent by the scammers.
Hi! I have some bad news for you.
A few months ago, I gained access to the devices you use to browse websites.
This software gives me access to all the controllers of your devices (e.g. microphone, camera, etc.). I sent all your information, data, photos and browsing history to my servers. I have access to all your messengers, social networks, emails, chat histories and contact lists. My virus constantly updates its signature (it is driver-based), which is why it remains invisible to antivirus software. I think you can now see why I remained unnoticed until this email...
While collecting information about you, I discovered that you are a great fan of adult websites and more. You really love visiting porn sites and watching exciting videos, having a great deal of fun while doing so.
Well, I managed to record several of your obscene scenes and edit several videos showing you masturbating and reaching orgasm. If you have any doubts, I can make a few clicks and all your videos will be available to your friends, colleagues and family.
I also have no problem sharing them publicly on the Internet. I can also publicly disclose all your personal data. I could ruin your reputation forever.
I think you really don’t want that to happen; given the nature of the videos you like watching (you know exactly what I mean), it would be a real catastrophe for you.
Let’s settle this this way: you will transfer 4,270 Polish zlotys to me (in bitcoin equivalent at the exchange rate applicable when the funds are transferred), and as soon as the transfer arrives, I will immediately delete all that dirt. Then we will forget about each other.
My bitcoin wallet for payment: ##########
If you don’t know how to buy and transfer bitcoins, you can use any modern search engine.
I am giving you 50 hours (within two days) to pay. I have a notification to read this email, and the clock will stop when you see this email.
I also promise to deactivate and remove all malicious software from your devices. It’s a fair deal, and the price is quite low considering that I have been checking your profile and traffic for some time.
Do not try to reply to me. It makes no sense (the sender’s address is generated automatically). Filing a complaint anywhere is pointless because this email cannot be traced, nor can my bitcoin address. I do not make mistakes.
If I find out that you shared this message with anyone else, the video will be released immediately. I will permanently destroy your reputation, and all your data will become public.
Best wishes!
