As we read in Wikipedia:
The raccoon, American raccoon (Procyon lotor), is a medium-sized mammal species from the raccoon family (Procyonidae), native to North America. It is the largest member of the raccoon family, with a body length of 40 to 70 cm and a weight of 3.5–9 kg, and is usually active at night. The raccoon is an omnivore; its diet consists of 40% invertebrates, 33% plants and 27% vertebrates. Ninety percent of the raccoon’s gray fur consists of a dense undercoat that protects it from the cold. The most characteristic features of the raccoon are its extremely nimble front paws and the black mask pattern around its eyes; these are elements of the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are known for their intelligence; studies show that these animals can remember solutions to tasks for as long as three years.
The raccoon’s original habitats were the deciduous and mixed forests of North America. However, thanks to their considerable adaptability, these animals have adapted to life in mountainous areas and salt marshes, as well as in urbanized areas, where they are sometimes considered pests. As a result of escapes from human homes and introductions carried out in the mid-20th century, raccoons are also found in continental Europe, the Caucasus region and Japan.
