What paint will be best?
The most important issue to consider when choosing metal paint is what we are going to paint with it. The market offers a whole palette of colours, from black and red to completely different shades. Nowadays, practically any colour from the RAL palette can be found on the market.
When it comes to the finish, the market offers, among other options, paint that is:
- glossy
- semi-matte
- matte.
Before choosing a specific paint, you should read the information below.
Paint classification according to the material being painted
In general, metal paint may be intended for non-ferrous and ferrous metals. For each of these materials, at least several different types of paint can be listed. Namely:
- paints for non-ferrous metals – acrylic metal paints, acrylic-latex paints, vinyl paints, vinyl-latex paints
- paints for ferrous metals – alkyd, chlorinated rubber, epoxy, polyurethane and oil-alkyd paints
Paints for non-ferrous metals are usually used when renovating metal roof tiles and guttering components. Acrylic paints are chosen most often because they are water-based and anticorrosive.
Paints for direct application to rust
When renovating various metal elements located outdoors, you can often encounter the problem of rusted components. That is why the market offers special paints intended for direct application to rust. These are universal topcoat products. By using these solutions, it is possible to skip the application of priming or undercoat layers. The most important advantage of this type of paint is that it adheres perfectly to the painted surface. However, it should be remembered that applying this type of paint to a heavily rusted element will not only fail to produce the desired effect but may even cause harm. When choosing this type of paint, you should opt for top-quality products.
Other paints
The market also offers more specialised products intended for specific applications. Among metal paints, the following should be mentioned:
- for painting radiators
- producing a hammered finish, known as “orange peel”
- spray paint – used mainly for painting small elements
- anti-burglary paints, which create a slippery and sticky coating
As you can see, there are truly many different metal paints available on the market, and everyone can find one that meets their expectations.
