Meteorologists warn that we can expect an onslaught of severe heat as early as Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach around 30°C, or even higher. The weather has definitely not been kind to us this year, so here is our advice on how to get through the first heatwave of the year.
WARNING! Heatwaves are particularly dangerous for young children and older people, those with diabetes, hypertension and heart problems. People taking medication should also exercise particular caution.
How can you get through a heatwave?
- avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day (10:00–17:00)
- avoid excessive sun exposure and sunbathing
- use sunscreen
- do not leave children, animals or flammable materials in a car
- wear loose, breathable clothing covering as much skin as possible; wear a hat and sunglasses
- drink plenty of fluids regularly
- avoid drinks containing alcohol and sugar
- eat light meals, paying particular attention to the freshness of the ingredients
- avoid physical exertion
- take cool showers and baths. (A completely cold shower during hot weather may cause thermal shock)
- avoid large temperature differences between air-conditioned rooms and cars and the outdoor temperature
- close and cover windows during the day
- stay in the coolest room in the house, especially at night
