The incident took place on June 5, at around 8:20 p.m. The duty officer at the Kowary Police Station received a report of a fire in a multi-family building. – Before he had time to notify a patrol, it turned out that police officers were already at the scene. While driving along 1 Maja Street in Kowary, the officers noticed smoke coming from the building. They immediately went to help the residents – says Deputy Superintendent Edyta Bagrowska, press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra.

She adds:

During the operation, the officers determined that the fire had started in an apartment occupied by a 58-year-old resident of Karkonosze County. It turned out that the man had fallen asleep with a cigarette, causing a fire in his apartment.

Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the other apartments. The 58-year-old was completely drunk; a test showed 2 per mille of alcohol in his system. However, he managed to leave the burning apartment on his own.

Ten people were evacuated from the building. Fortunately, no one suffered any serious injuries.

The 58-year-old was taken into police custody. He will now be held responsible for creating a threat to the lives and health of the building’s other residents. He faces up to three years in prison.
