The incident occurred on Wednesday, 19 May, in the afternoon, in the centre of Legnica. The authorities were notified that a bloodied man was walking along the street holding a knife. (As was subsequently determined initially, these were traces of self-inflicted injuries.)
Prosecutor Lidia Tkaczyszyn, press spokesperson for the Legnica District Prosecutor’s Office:
When he saw the police officers, the man began to flee and headed towards an area where there was a children’s playground. When the officers blocked his path, he lunged at one of them with a knife. The officer then used his weapon and wounded him in a limb.[nogę – przyp. istotne.pl].

The aggressor was taken to hospital. His life is not in danger. The prosecutor’s office is handling the case and is determining, among other things, whether the use of a firearm was justified in this incident.
The detained man had previously been in conflict with the law and had even served a sentence. He has mental health problems and had received psychiatric treatment in the past. (Details on radiowroclaw.pl).
