A gateway to a career: a class under the patronage of the Ministry of National Defence

Are you thinking about choosing a secondary school? Consider cybersecurity-profile classes! This is precisely the time when eighth-grade pupils and their parents are considering which secondary school to choose. How about a cybersecurity-profile class?

From the next school year, only 16 schools from across Poland, including II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec as the only school from Lower Silesia, will begin a pilot programme under the patronage of the Ministry of National Defence. The candidate is guaranteed excellent learning conditions, a unique programme and prospects for professional development after graduating. This refers to the “CYBER.MIL with a Class” programme, which will involve creating classes with the profile “Cybersecurity and Modern Information Technologies.” The programme provides students with computer-science education, including issues related to cybersecurity, particularly in the area of national security.

The Ministry of National Defence set very high criteria. The requirements for schools were rigorous, but as a result the programme includes the best of the best. For schools, this is a major challenge, but also an opportunity to establish themselves in the demanding education market and attract the most talented students. For students, it is certainly a very high bar, but also an opportunity to gain concrete skills and exceptionally valuable knowledge for the future.

“CYBER.MIL with a Class” will be conducted during the first three years of education in a given type of school (general secondary schools and technical secondary schools). Each class will have a limited number of students – no more than 15. The curriculum will cover thematic areas such as:

  • the basics of cryptography,
  • the history of cryptography,
  • the basics of algorithmics,
  • the basics of cybersecurity,
  • data and information security management.

Studying in such a class will enable students to acquire knowledge and competencies concerning contemporary digital threats, cybersecurity risk management, information-system security and cryptographic aspects of data protection.

The course will include theoretical and practical classes using modern operating systems and symbolic-computation packages. Remote classes in the form of e-learning are also planned, as are study visits to Ministry of National Defence units, research institutes and companies in the cybersecurity sector.

The Office for the “Become a Soldier of the Republic of Poland” Programme, already experienced in conducting this type of educational project, is responsible for coordinating and implementing the programme. Substantive supervision will be provided by the National Cybersecurity Centre and the Military University of Technology. The Ministry of National Defence will provide schools with financial support to carry out the task.

The funds may be used, among other things, to purchase computer equipment, printers, interactive whiteboards, multimedia projectors, licences and software, and to provide internet services. The programme aims to educate potential candidates for soldiers and employees of the Polish Armed Forces, particularly for the Cyber Defence Forces being established. This means that for most graduates, participation in the programme will be an introduction to prestigious positions in units subordinate to the Ministry of National Defence.

There are certainly many eighth-graders this year who are interested in the uniformed services while also being passionate about computer science. This offer is ideal for you! And what if you do not have clearly defined plans or are afraid that, even if you are considering the military, you may change your mind in a few years? Do not worry; this is only an option. Treat it as another door opening before you. Today, combating threats in cyberspace is no longer a challenge of the future but of the present, and demand for specialists in this field will only grow.
