In an email to the editorial office, the Reader wrote:
The breeding season is underway, and birds must not be prevented from accessing their nests. Such action is illegal. Meanwhile, in one of the blocks on Wańkowicza Street, no. [...], a ventilation opening through which birds had entered was sealed. [...] For a long time, a pair of jackdaws desperately tried to get inside. Were nestlings or other birds sealed in there alive and condemned to death?
And she asked:
What kind of people are we? Do we not care about other creatures? How can the residents of this staircase (the person or people who blocked the opening) be so cruel? Birds are protected by law, too.
She also added:
The grille must be removed until the end of the breeding season, and when installing it, one must make sure that there are no living creatures inside that would thereby be condemned to death. Perhaps there is a Human Being among the residents? All it takes is removing this one grille
Beata Ślęzak, head of the Bolesławianka Housing Cooperative, explains:
I would like to inform you that the construction of the flat roof allows birds to move across its surface, which enables them to enter and leave the roof space through other openings. On the date when the photograph was taken by the Reader, one opening had been left unblocked (photo no. 1). Additionally, yesterday, a second opening was opened in the immediate vicinity of the opening indicated by the Reader (photo no. 2).
At the same time, I would like to inform you that residents of the aforementioned building reported that birds were soiling the balcony and damaging the insulation of the flat roof by carrying away wool, and demanded that a grille be installed to prevent deterioration of the building’s thermal insulation properties. In such situations, we always try to protect the legitimate interests of residents while remaining sensitive to the fate of other creatures. Therefore, I believe that the accusation of a lack of empathy toward animals is hurtful.
