Ninety-six people died in the disaster near the airport in Smolensk. Among them were President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński and his wife, the last president of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski, deputy speakers of the Sejm and Senate, parliamentarians, commanders of all branches of the Polish Armed Forces, employees of the Chancellery of the President, heads of state institutions, clergy, representatives of ministries, veterans’ and social organizations, accompanying persons in the delegation attending ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, as well as the TU-154 aircraft crew.
